Hero Actions are the movement layer that makes gunplay feel like an action movie. They are also the main way you earn Resonance Points for Tri-Attacks. If the overview in /guides/battle-system-explained/ felt abstract, this page is the hands-on version.
What is a Hero Action?
A Hero Action is a Bezel-powered sprint along a path you draw on the battlefield. While running, each completed charge ring lets you fire again until the Action Bar runs out. The 4K/HD in-game tutorials call these Hero Actions (some community guides say “Hero Attack,” but the UI text uses Hero Action).
You spend one Bezel per Hero Action. Bezels are the orange pills on the Hero Gauge; see /guides/bezels-and-bezel-shards/ for how they break and refill.
How do I trigger a Hero Action step by step?
- Select the character whose turn it is.
- Open Hero Action mode and draw a path across open tiles. Longer paths consume more Action Bar before you even shoot.
- Confirm with Square again to start the run (Combat 5 / GameFAQs threetimes control table). PC shows the same action on screen in the 4K/HD tutorials.
- While moving, press X when a charge ring completes to fire at a body part from the ground. Repeat while the Action Bar lasts.
- Press Square during the run to jump, then X to fire at the main body (spread shots across shield segments). Combat 16 uses the same Square-then-X pattern for smackdown setups.

The training text in that frame is literal: you must attack during the run, not just sprint.
What changes between ground and air shots?
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Ground shots | X while running hits the part you aimed at; handguns can roll Gauge Break on direct hits (Combat 13 / Tips 6) |
| Air shots | After Square to jump, X targets the main body and can spread damage across shield segments (Combat 5) |
Combat 15 adds Bonus Shots when you handgun or machine gun an airborne enemy from the ground during a Hero Action. Combat 16’s smackdown is the reverse: ground shot to launch, Square jump, then X on the way down.

Field fights use the same charge-ring rhythm once Bezels and scratch numbers appear on the HUD.
How do Hero Actions tie into Resonance?
Before you confirm a path, watch the line color:
- Blue path → crosses between your other two hunters → +1 Resonance Point after the run.
- Red path → no crossing → no point.
Resonance is displayed above the party list (for example, “1 Resonance”). Points drop if your next action is a normal move or attack without earning a new point, so chain blue paths when you plan a Tri-Attack soon. Full routing rules sit in /guides/tri-attack-and-resonance-points/.
What are good Hero Action habits?
- Fire early, fire often. Charge once, shoot, repeat. A sprint with zero shots wastes a Bezel.
- Plan blue lines before spending the Bezel. Tri-Attacks need at least one stored Resonance.
- Jump to bypass shields, not only for style. Spread damage clears plates SMGs cannot reach from the ground.
- Re-draw the path before confirming if the enemy moved—obstacles stop a run mid-route, but there is no Circle “stop” on solo Hero Actions (Circle stops runners during Tri-Attack only).
- Keep one Bezel in reserve when possible so a surprise hit does not instantly drop you into Critical Condition.
How does scratch versus direct fit in?
Hero Actions do not change damage types. Machine guns still scratch; handguns still deal direct damage and convert scratch. Pair paths so your SMG hunter scratches during the run, then swap to a handgun hunter for detonation. Details: /guides/scratch-damage-vs-direct-damage/ and /weapons/weapon-types-explained/.

That jump shot is the air branch from Combat 5—use it when ground lines hit shields, not only for smackdown finishers (Combat 16).
Chapter 1’s /bosses/tar-man/ fight is a practical check: green Hero Action paths behind crates, jump shots on Drum Carriers, and saving Bezels for the main body.
